A Song And Dance Act

Charles Duhigg's Supercommunicators is useful for leaders because teams rarely fail only from lack of information. They often fail because people are having different conversations at the same time. One person is discussing facts, another is seeking recognition, and another is reacting emotionally.

The practical skill is to identify what the conversation needs before trying to win it. Is this a decision conversation, an emotional conversation, or an identity conversation? The answer changes how you should respond.

Leadership applications

  • Ask better questions before giving advice.
  • Separate facts from feelings and status concerns.
  • Listen for what is not being said directly.
  • Make people feel understood before pushing for alignment.

Good communication is not decoration around work. It is part of the work, especially in leadership.
